Don’t Trash California and You Won’t Have to Mess with Sunny.
San Diego – Sunny Garcia has been riding the waves since he was a kid. Now in his 19th season on the professional surfing circuit, this five-time Hawaiian Triple Crown winner and 2000 World Champion has traveled the world as many times over, standing tall in South Africa, shooting the curl in Hawaii, and wiping out off the coasts of Japan, Spain and Australia.
And while he’s sat on the water just beyond the break waiting for the next set of waves, Garcia’s seen a lot of rubbish float by, especially along the coast of California. This surfer boy has had it up to his shoulder-high tattoo in trash. As Garcia’s gone “Surfin’ USA,” he’s found the greatest incidence of trash along California’s coastline, from “down in La Jolla, to up Doheny way.”
Now he’s telling teachers, fellow surfers and beach-goers that trashing California is not the way to play.
This year Garcia signed on, gratis, to be the poster boy for the “Don’t Trash California” campaign sponsored by Keep California Beautiful, the non-profit association charged with promoting litter prevention throughout the state by promoting individual responsibility.
